A man has the ability to see through illusion to the magical things that happen in the world, just out of sightg.  However, he can’t prove that the things he sees are real, and he isn’t sure of it himself, so he ends up suppressing his spirit eye with antipsychotic medications.

He dates a woman; they move in together and end up breaking up but staying roommates (for appearance, imagine Cobie Smulders of How I Met Your Mother). 

An evil witch seems to kill him (middle-aged professional-looking woman with her hair in a long bob).  She chases him throughout the Chelsea district of New York City, and on the subway lines.  He tries to escape but ultimately realizes he can’t and he has to kill her in self-defense. 

He dates another woman, this time a blonde who lives in the same complex and sometimes talks about secretly being a dragon.  One day she comes to him while he is in bed.  He can almost feel her tail, but not quite, and he chafes in side her, as if he were rubbing against scales.  But he sees nothing different.  While they are having sex, his ex-girlfriend walks into the room and starts talking to them.  it is awkward, but he doesn’t tell her to leave.  He thinks about asking her to join them, but does not.

When it is iover, his ex-girlfriend says to the current one, “I’d heard there was a dragon in the building, but i didn’t know what floor.”

Later, the three of them are walking on the street, along with an overweight black man in a beret (This I think was based on the character Jean Kejean, from Saturday Night Live‘s Weekend Update last night).  Innuendoes in the conversation suggest that all four of them have dragon ancestrey, that it is the dragon blood that lets him see the way he sees when he’s off his meds, and he may have other abilities he hasn’t discovered yet.

As they walk, he also notices handwritten signs in store windows, all of them subtle notes to hm from the woman he had to kill in self-defense.  One suggests that it is always in his power to see the truth.  He looks after that, and he sees his companions looking older than they had a moment before, but he knows that the gray he sees in their hair is just a hint–that the black man is over a thousand years old, his ex-girlfriend almost a hundred.  His current girlfriend barely looks any older; she is, like him, still young, just figuring it out.

The man and his girlfriend see a doorway that intrigues them and go inside, but as they enter, his girlfriend notices a sign that says something about Hell.  “I don’t want ot go there,” she says, but as they turn to go back their way is blocked by two clownlike entities, one of them carrying a sign (I don’t remember what it says).  They are separated from their other two companions, who are not there to notice.

As the two of them go in, the man notices a poster on an angled ceiling, with a picture resembling Jim Morrison, with the name Orpheus underneath.  He explains to his girlfriend that it won’t be as bad as it seems–the Hades of Greek legend rather than the Christian Hell, and they are embarking on an Orphic journey. 

“What’s that?” she asks.

And he starts to explain as they step onto a metal spiral slide going down to Gehenna.
